Wildlife Professional Award Dr. Ken Higgins (SDSU) presents Casey Kruse (US Army Corp of Engineers) with the 2000 Wildlife Professional of the Year Award. Casey Kruse is the Endangered Species Coordinator for the Army Corp of Engineers Omaha District. His primary responsibilities include state and international coordination of the Corps piping plover and least tern recovery objectives, research projects relating to piping plover and least tern biology and developing new strategies for recovery of rare species on the Missouri River. Kruse has taken technological opportunities provided by the Corps and translated them into resource benefits for the Missouri River. He has been instrumental in leading research efforts to develop a habitat management plan using digital-ortho photography of the Missouri River. |

Citizens Award Michael Dove of Rapid City received The South Dakota Chapter of The Wildlife Society's 2000 Citizen's Award. Michael Dove works tirelessly for wildlife conservation and the hunting heritage movement. He is a member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, Black Hills Sportsman's Club, South Dakota Wildlife Federation, South Dakota Bow Hunters Inc. He has been extremely involved with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation as a Habitat Partner, serving on and chairing committees and is presently a member of REMF's Project Advisory Council in South Dakota. |

Outstanding Graduate Student Award Ron Schauer (SDGFP) presents Lowell E. Schmitz (SDSU) with the 2000 Outstanding Graduate Student Award. Lowell is a M.S. Degree Candidate in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. He received his B.S. from Moorhead State University, Moorhead, Minnesota. His research has focused on the development of lure forages for minimizing winter depredation by deer in South Dakota. |
