Wildlife Professional Award The 2003 Professional of the Year Award was given to Dave McGuigan, formerly of the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department. Dave rose through the ranks of the SDGFP beginning his career in 1969 at Custer State Park. In 1974 he became the Assistant Regional Supervisor of Land Management in Chamberlain. In 1978 he was promoted to Division Management Specialist. As the head "habitat manager", Dave provided the leadership to develop the GPA system into the flagship program it is today. Dave was also instrumental in several key land acquisitions that opened up critical areas for hunting. He was a leader in the development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Position Systems (GPS) in Game, Fish and Parks and in state government. For more than 30 years, Dave has worked tirelessly on habitat projects, hunting access and land acquisitions. Because of the scope and the nature of Dave's work, his legacy on South Dakota's natural resources will be felt for decades by anyone who hunts, fishes, traps or otherwise uses public land in South Dakota. |
